George,

Despite US failings, we also have many successes and we "try" more than any other country. We offer "aide" and support to more nations than anyone else. The US is still an amazing country and I truly believe that most intellegent people here want to do the right thing. And we have tolerance, we do. We allow freedom of religion, of speach, of gender, of orientation.... It's a good place to be. I wouldn't want to grow up in China!

George, George, George!
I get it that you have no television. That IS a huge obstabcle to viewing the Olympics - or any other televised sport.

But if you have an opportunity to watch some of the distance runners - it CAN be somewhat interesting and informative. I like to watch the runners, the cyclists, and the swimmers -all elite in their sports. I marvel at the range of body types and techniques. The marathon female runners, for example. Some are short and solid. Some are tall and lanky. Some have a quick, powerful gait. Some are loose and easy. Some even look tight and awkward. Yet they are all outstanding performers. I watch them and wonder what they all have that gives them that special edge. I look for similarities and differences. It's fun! (IF you can keep it from being jealousy-making. . .)

Hey, George -

Just wanted to say that I hear you re: the injury issue. Part of the aging process - avoiding injury actually cane become more important than optimizing performance through training. This frustrating fact is big my mind this week - I'm entered in 3 races between this Sunday and next. Yipes for me. . . .

Decided to start blogging again - intend to dissect this injury vs training conundrum in my next blog. . . .

George, I think I have a solution for you. SBCC's sustainability program is having a series of evening lectures that speak to the issues you discuss. Specifically, Brad Lancaster, author of Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands will be speaking Friday September 12 from 7:30 - 9 PM in the BC Forum on the west campus. He lives in Tucson and has done some amazing things with little rainfall. I have his book and it's full of great ideas. He will have his book there or you can get a copy at the SB Botanic Garden where my wife works. For more info on the SBCC program go to

thanks for the tips. i have a mama and an adolescent who are big fans of my apple tree and the compost pile. i have three cats, and they all seem to be peaceful with each other. i leave water bowls out, because of the 100+ temps here, and heard someone drinking rather noisily a couple nights ago. the cats were all on my bed (no-one so much as raised a weary head at the disturbance) so i assume it was the skunk. i had been a bit curious about its behavior, it didn't seem fazed at all by my presence. so. good to know.

Chips do seem like a solution. But after talking to the race director of the local half last year I gather that (at least in this case) the mats would intermittently fail and there would be stretches of several minutes where no finishers were recorded.

This is why he always insists on recording gun time too.

So there were about 50 runners with no chip finishing times out of roughly 2000. That's 1 in forty. If that ratio holds then there's a good chance that the chip would fail at least once for each runner in an hour.
